Prescription guide

How to get a tirzepatide prescription.

Tirzepatide is FDA-approved as Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes and as Zepbound for chronic weight management and for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity. Your own doctor, a telehealth clinic, or a local clinic can prescribe it if you qualify.

01 · Where to get it

Where to get a tirzepatide prescription.

A consultation is an evaluation, not a purchase. The clinician decides whether tirzepatide is appropriate for you, and may suggest something else.

  1. 01

Your doctor or a local clinic

A primary care clinician, endocrinologist, or obesity medicine clinic can prescribe Mounjaro or Zepbound and handle insurance prior authorization.

  2. 02

    Telehealth clinic

A clinician licensed in your state reviews your history by video or questionnaire and, if tirzepatide is appropriate, sends the prescription to a pharmacy that ships to you.

  3. 03

    Manufacturer self-pay

With a valid prescription, Lilly sells Zepbound vials directly to self-pay patients through LillyDirect. Check current terms on Lilly's site.

02 · Before you book

What to ask a clinic first.

  1. 01Will you prescribe brand Zepbound or Mounjaro, and do you handle insurance prior authorization?
  2. 02If you offer a compounded version, what documented medical need makes it appropriate for me?
  3. 03How do you schedule dose increases and follow-up visits?

Our peptide therapy guide covers cost, insurance, and how to check a clinic's credentials.

Questions

Tirzepatide prescription FAQ.

How do I get a tirzepatide prescription?

Book a visit with a clinician who can evaluate you, by telehealth or in person. If you meet the criteria for an approved use and tirzepatide is appropriate, they can prescribe Zepbound or Mounjaro.

Is compounded tirzepatide still available?

Much less so. With the shortage over, FDA expects pharmacies not to regularly compound essentially copies of the approved drug. Compounding is limited to documented individual needs, and FDA has issued warning letters over copies sold with added ingredients.

Is retatrutide available by prescription?

No. Retatrutide is an investigational drug still in clinical trials and is not FDA-approved. A clinician cannot write a standard prescription for it, and products sold as retatrutide online are not approved drugs.

Does insurance cover tirzepatide?

It depends on your plan and diagnosis. Coverage is more common for type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea than for weight management alone. Self-pay options exist through the manufacturer.
