Prescription guide

How to get a semaglutide prescription.

Semaglutide is FDA-approved as Ozempic and Rybelsus for type 2 diabetes, and as Wegovy injection and Wegovy pill for chronic weight management and cardiovascular risk reduction in eligible adults. A clinician can prescribe the brand that fits your diagnosis.

01 · Where to get it

Where to get a semaglutide prescription.

A consultation is an evaluation, not a purchase. The clinician decides whether semaglutide is appropriate for you, and may suggest something else.

  1. 01

Your doctor or a local clinic

A primary care clinician, endocrinologist, or obesity medicine clinic can prescribe semaglutide and handle insurance prior authorization.

  2. 02

    Telehealth clinic

A clinician licensed in your state reviews your history by video or questionnaire and, if semaglutide is appropriate, sends the prescription to a pharmacy that ships to you.

  3. 03

    Manufacturer self-pay

With a valid prescription, Novo Nordisk sells Wegovy to self-pay patients through NovoCare Pharmacy. Check current terms on Novo Nordisk's site.

02 · Before you book

What to ask a clinic first.

  1. 01Which brand fits my diagnosis, injection or pill, and do you handle prior authorization?
  2. 02If you offer a compounded version, what documented medical need makes it appropriate for me?
  3. 03How do you schedule dose increases and follow-up visits?

Our peptide therapy guide covers cost, insurance, and how to check a clinic's credentials.

Questions

Semaglutide prescription FAQ.

How do I get a semaglutide prescription?

See a clinician who can evaluate you, by telehealth or in person. If you meet the criteria for an approved use, they can prescribe Wegovy, Ozempic, or Rybelsus as appropriate.

Is compounded semaglutide still available?

Much less so. With the shortage over, FDA expects pharmacies not to regularly compound essentially copies of the approved drug, and it has issued warning letters over copies sold with added ingredients.

Is there a semaglutide pill for weight loss?

Yes. Wegovy pill is FDA-approved for chronic weight management in eligible adults. Rybelsus is a different oral semaglutide approved for type 2 diabetes.

Does insurance cover semaglutide?

It depends on your plan and diagnosis. Coverage is more common for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular risk reduction than for weight management alone. Self-pay options exist through the manufacturer.
