Melanotan I, also called afamelanotide, is a lab-made version of the hormone that tells skin cells to make melanin. It acts mainly on the MC1R receptor in skin, so it darkens skin with less effect on appetite and libido than Melanotan II. As an implant (Scenesse) it is FDA-approved for adults with erythropoietic protoporphyria, a rare light-sensitivity disorder. Research vials sold by peptide vendors are not that approved product.
