How does hexarelin act on the body at the receptor level?
Hexarelin is a synthetic growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR) agonist, meaning it acts by stimulating that receptor. In ApoE-/- mice and in RAW264.7 macrophages, hexarelin increased GHSR expression. In the aorta of ApoE-/- mice and in RAW264.7 macrophages, hexarelin suppressed ox-LDL uptake and LOX-1 expression. In the same mouse aorta and macrophage studies, hexarelin inhibited activation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB).

Romano Deghenghi and colleagues described hexarelin in a 1994 experimental paper. Its sequence contains six amino acids, including D-2-methyltryptophan and D-phenylalanine, and ends in an amidated lysine.
