What does Thymalin do in the body?
In in vitro cell studies, thymalin appeared to stimulate differentiation of CD117+ cells into mature CD28+ T lymphocytes, as indirectly indicated by the findings. Thymalin increases the functional activity of T lymphocytes, but its targeted molecular mechanism requires further study. The authors suggest that thymalin's antiviral effect may consist in compensatory stimulation of HSC differentiation into CD28+ T lymphocytes at the stage of immunity suppression during an unfavorable viral infection course.

An extract rather than one sequence
Thymalin is a thymus-derived polypeptide extract, rather than a single peptide with one defined amino-acid sequence. In a 2023 paper, Linkova, Khavinson and colleagues distinguished the extract from the individual Lys-Glu and Glu-Trp dipeptides they investigated. An isolated dipeptide and the broader extract are different research materials, even when they appear in the same research program.
